The Gonzalez brothers combined to drive in all the runs with the younger Gonzalez, Adrian, driving in two while older brother, Edgar, drove in the other run in a 3-2 win over Puerto Rico in the 2nd game of the 2009 Serie del Caribe.   This dynamic duo is giving fans a preview of what can be expected in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

With the game tied in the seventh, Heber Gomez singled to right to open up the inning. He moved to second on Carlos Rivera’s missed catch error. American Jon Weber bunted him over to third. San Diego Padres’ Adrian Gonzalez hit a sac fly to center field allowing Gomez to score and give them the 3-2 win in their first game.

Taking advantage of a passed ball where Quintero advanced to second base allowing Adrian Gonzalez to drive him in with a soft fly ball to center giving the Venados a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Ponce struck back in the top of the second when Eli Marrero grounded into a force out to second and New York Mets’ Raul Casanova came in to score on a botched double play on Edgar Gonzalez’ throwing error.

Ponce took the lead in the top of the fifth when Jesus Feliciano singled to right field driving in Fernando Cortez to give them the 2-1 advantage.

Mazatlan answered back in the bottom of the sixth when San Diego Padres’ Edgar Gonzalez singled to left allowing Anaheim Angels’ Freddy Sandoval to tie the score, 2-2.

A pitching duel took place in this low scoring affair. Giancarlo Alvarado established a Caribbean Series record striking out six batters in recording the first six outs of the game. Alvarado settled down and mowed down 11 batters and walked only one in 5.2 innings pitched. Walter Silva matched Alvarado striking 11 batters of his own in 7 innings and came away with the victory.

Ponce did not go quietly in the ninth advancing a runner to third before Casanova struck out to end the game and Hector Navarro recorded the save.

Mexico is looking to win their first crown since 2005 where they were also represented by the Venados in a series that took place in Mazatlan.
