Completaron la 4ta. jornada en la Serie del Caribe 2009 en Mexicali y la tabla de posiciones presenta un orden inalterable a través de ella, donde mas que pitcheo y bateo, los duelos han sido de fildeo.

De acuerdo al standing, Venezuela (4-0), México (3-1), Dominicana (2-2) y Puerto Rico (0-4) están acomodados también los equipos en fildeo, teniendo menos errores el mejor y en orden descendente: 2, 3, 6 y 7. Para remachar el detalle, sus carreras sucias, que después de todo son lo mas costoso, nuevamente los coloca en el mismo orden de la tabla de posiciones ya señalada: 0, 2, 4 y 6. Obviamente se gana haciendo carreras; pero cuando un equipo evita que el rival anote, al menos no puede perder y por el momento ha sido clave.

Los triunfos de Venezuela (5-2) ante Dominicana, que quedó eliminada de poder ser campeón, y México (5-1 en 12 entradas) frente a Puerto Rico, que sigue en busca de su 1er. victoria, hará que la 5ta. jornada pueda ser la mas importante. Si los Tigres de Aragua mantienen lo invicto, se coronarán; pero si los Venados de Mazatlán logran vencerlos, el sábado se decidiría si acaso no es necesario un juego de desempate que aún no estaba autorizado y en caso dado se celebraría el domingo, en una 7ma. jornada. El viernes tenía la Confederación de Caribe una sesión citada para decidirlo, aunque se espera que lo aprueben como ha sucedido en ocasiones anteriores. A propósito, los pitchers anunciados son los derechos Erik Arteaga (agente libre) y Francisco Córdova (Angelinos de Anaheim).

En la derrota, ya que fue el 1ro. en hablar después del resultado, Eduardo Pérez, timonel de los Leones de Ponce destacó que tanto su gente como los mexicanos jugaron un excelente béisbol y la diferencia fue que en el momento clave, los jugadores mexicanos tuvieron mejores turnos al bat, “contra nuestro buen pitcheo”. Señaló que no era necesario tener que motivar a sus muchachos para salir el viernes a dar el máximo, en busca del 1er. acierto. Sin embargo, pidió a la afición mexicana asistir al parque para ver ese juego y así fuese una motivación.

Para sellar la victoria, México contó con sobresalientes oportunidades al bat en el Inc. decisivo. El catcher, Miguel Ojeda negoció un pase para empezar la entrada. Era la 7ma. vez que lo hacía el tricolor en el juego, incluyendo el 6to. capítulo cuando empataron el partido. Héber Goméz se sacrificó enseguida a Ojeda, y Carlos Rivera dejó ir un out seguro tratando de sacar al corredor mas adelantado; en lugar de ello le cargaron un error mediante el cual Ojeda llegó a la antesala. Estaba la mesa puesta para el héroe de la noche, dando Christian Quintero sobresaliente turno al bat para impulsar la diferencia. El héroe de la noche anterior, Adrián González pudo aumentar la ventaja; pero fue ponchado y entonces, Freddy Sandoval que había entrado a correr por Roberto Saucedo en la 9va., remachó el rally con un doble remolcador de dos carreras mas y avanzando hasta la 3ra. base en bola ocupada. Por cierto, Puerto Rico dejó a 13 corredores en base y México se dio el lujo de dejar a 10.

RECORDS:

Habiendo tocado el tema de la defensiva, ingrediente que suele ser menospreciado, los 5 errores cometidos por Dominicana, el miércoles contra México, quedaron lejos del record que impuso Puerto Rico, en 1987 con 8. Irónicamente ese juego lo ganaron los Criollos de Caguas puesto que dieron 8 cuadrangulares, otra marca ante las Aguilas Cibaeñas en Hermosillo, Sonora.

 

Oficialmente, hasta que Adrián González dio sus 3 jonrones de aquella jornada entre México y Dominicana (anteayer), iban 50 protagonistas que se habían aventado la puntada de dar 2 jonrones en un juego. Entre ellos está su hermano, Edgar González, el mayor.

MEXICO’S CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES ALIVE AFTER BEATING PUERTO RICO

Venados de Mazatlan’s victory over the Leones de Ponce kept the Mexico’s hopes to win a title alive as they are the only ones who can dethrone undefeated Venezuela.

Mazatlan defeated Ponce 5-1 improving their record to 3-1 with just two games left in the series. With the game tied at 1 in the top of the twelfth, Mexico finally found their bats and broke it open scoring four. Christian Quintero singled in Miguel Ojeda, Freddy Sandoval later doubled to right pushing in two more and Edgar V. Gonzalez continued his hot hitting streak doubling to right allowing Freddy Sandoval to cross the plate.

After a night where 21 runs were scored in Thursday’s nightcap between Mexico and Dominican Republic the series reverted back to a pitching oriented battle and tonight was a flashback to game one where Mexico and Puerto Rico were locked in a low scoring battle through eleven innings.
In the third inning, Ponce’s Luis Figueroa was the first to cross the plate when he scored on a sac fly by Carlos Rivera to take the 1-0 lead.
Venados tied the game at 1 in the fifth when Edgar V. Gonzalez singled to get on base and Miguel Ojeda brought him in on a long single to right.

Puerto Rico threatened in the bottom of the ninth when a runner reached third base before Jose Luis Garcia struck out Rivera to end the rally and send the game into extra innings. Ponce was unable to bring any runs across the plate as they left 13 runners on base. “We had a chance to get runs, but leaving that many runners on base things don’t turn out the way we want,” Eduardo Perez said.
Venados loaded the bases in the eleventh, but Jon Weber hit a grounder to the first baseman to end the inning and the threat.
Mazatlan’s Pablo Ortega pitched 6.1 innings only allowing 1 run. Jose Luis Garcia pitched 2.1 innings in relief to get the victory. Ponce’s Bill Pulsipher pitched 6.1 innings only allowing 1 run and Juan Padilla took the loss.

Ponce extends their losing streak to eleven dating back to 1982. Even with their losing streak anything can happen on the field and they still have a chance to play a key role in this Caribbean Series with a chance to defeat Venezuela when they square off on Saturday. Perez made reference to the streak, “I am not focusing on streaks that we cannot control, but rather on getting this team to 1-4 or even 2-4.”
On Friday, Puerto Rico will face the Dominican Republic in a battle between eliminated teams who are mostly playing for bragging rights rather than a title. “We are motivated against the Dominican Republic and are rivals and we want to win,” Perez added.
Mexico will face off against unbeaten Venezuela in the nightcap. “We know that Venezuela is the team to beat and the revenge factor will definitely play a role in tomorrow’s matchup,” Freddy Sandoval said.

A victory for Aragua would give them their first title ever, three years after Caracas won Venezuela’s last title in 2006. That year Venezuela won the championship preceding the first ever World Baseball Classic and this time around they are looking like a potential champion on the eve of the second World Baseball Classic.
