GAME TWELVE vs

THE TIGRES DE LICEY CROWNED CHAMPIONS OF THE SERIE DEL CARIBE

FEBRUARY 7 - Both Licey and the Aguilas, coming off losses, had a lot riding on the line and had different goals in mind in tonight’s game.  With the victory Licey would become champion while a loss would force a tiebreaker tomorrow night.  Licey returned to form and promptly beat the Aguilas 8-2 for their 10th crown in Caribbean Series history, the most by any club.

The game featured two pitchers from the Gigantes del Cibao Jose Capellan for Licey and Alfredo Simon for the Aguilas.

The Tigres scored the first run of the game when Timo Perez doubled in Jose Bautista.  They added another run in the third when Nelson Cruz singled to left scoring Emilio Bonifacio making it 2-0.  The Aguilas evened it up when Rafael Furcal took Capellan deep to right for the 2-run shot in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth with the game tied at two and runners at the corners, Bonifacio battled reliever Fabio Castro and singled to left on the twelfth pitch to break the 2-2 tie.  They did not let up adding three more runs and forcing two pitching changes in the inning.

Licey had fifteen hits and every batter in the lineup got a hit tonight.    Ramon Ortiz replaced Capellan in the fourth and he dominated the Aguilas’ batters retiring 13 of the 17 he faced in six scoreless innings.
The highlight of his pitching was in the eighth when he induced an inning ending double play off of Edwin Encarnacion’s bat.

Licey put the game out of reach in the ninth adding two more when Jose Offerman singled in Cruz and Bautista scored his second run of the night on Perez’ sac fly.

Winning their 10th Serie del Carbe championship Licey caps off the celebration of the 100 years in existance wonderfully.
