Kevin Barker (Nationals) went 2-for-4 a two-run double in the third and hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to lead the Dominican Republic (Toros del Este) to its first victory in the Caribbean World Series, a dramatic 6-5 win over Venezuela (Caribes de Anzoategui).

Barker hit a two-out solo shot to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning off Venezuela reliever Reynel Pinto (Marlins).

The drama unfolded in the top of the 9th inning as Venezuela, down by 6-3, mounted a two-out rally to pull within one run of the Dominican Republic champions, Los Toros.  After two quick outs, Venezuela catcher Eliezer Alfonzo (Mariners) singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jose Constanza (Braves). Outfielder Jackson Melian (Tigers) homers on a fly ball to left field, scoring in Alfonzo.

Reliever Julio Manon (Orioles) came in to relieve Winston Abreu (Blue Jays) and ended Venezuela’s threat by recording the final out of the inning.

Venezuela’s first-baseman Luis Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a pair of homers off Dominican starter Anuery Rodriguez (Astros) and 3 RBIs. Both starters had a no decision, allowing three runs in less than five innings.

Dominican Republic Dominates Venezuela, Series

Most of the drama was gone early, as the Dominican Republic scored 4 runs in the first, and cruised to a 7-4 victory over Venezuela, winning the 2010 Caribbean Series championship.

Los Leones del Escogido needed a victory to assure themselves of the title, and avoid a championship tilt with a red hot Puerto Rican Squad.

The first inning was a prime example of what went right for Escogido in The Series, and what went wrong for the 1-5 Leones de Caracas.

Venezuelan starter Ramon Ramirez, walked Freddy Guzman to start the game. Ramon Santiago tried to sacrifice Guzman to 2nd, but instead pushed the ball past the pitcher an beating it out for an infield later.

After Juan Francisco fanned, Guzman tried to steal third with cleanup man Kevin Barker at the plate. Venezuelan Catcher Jose Lobaton, rifled the ball into left field, that allowed Guzman to trot home with the first run,and sending Santiago to second.

This was just the beginning of Venezuela’s struggles in the inning. After walking Barker, Ramirez struck out Willis Otanez. Mets OF prospect Fernando Martinez hit a ball back through the middle, that glanced off the glove of diving Caracas shortstop Gregorio Petit. Santiago scored easily, and Barker came around to make it 3-0, when Center Fielder Jose Duarte’s throw to third sailed into the third base dugout.

Ramirez then balked Martinez home, making it 4-0 Dominican Republic. Ramirez night was over after just an inning and 43 pitches.

Martinez, ranked as the #3 prospect in the Mets system by Baseball America, was named Series MVP. He hit .348 with a pair of homers. Martinez struggled in a big league audition last season, before undergoing knee surgery in July.

It was 4-1, Dominican Republic when Reds 3B Prospect Juan Francisco added an RBI double in the 5th, giving him 6 RBI over the final 3 games of the tournament. Kevin Barker added an RBI single in the inning giving Escogido a 6-1 lead.

Venezuela cut the lead to 2 in the bottom of the inning. Carlos Quintero, hitting 9th and making his first appearance of the series, cracked a 3 run homer to cut the lead to 6-4. With 2 Outs in the inning, Gregorio Petit reached on an error, but Dominican starter Raul Valdes got slugger Oscar Salazar to ground to short, ending the rally.

But despite the fact the Venezuelans made a game out of it, they couldn’t get out of their own way. Caracas committed 5 errors, and reliever Edgar Estaga walked 2 and threw a bases loaded wild pitch in the 7th making it 7-4 Dominican Republic. Venezuela’s 12 errors were the most of any team in the tourney, and they scored just 16 total runs. They had just 3 base hits in the finale.

For 5-1 Escogido, it marks their first Caribbean Series title in 20 years. They do it under first year General Manager Moises Alou, who was a member of the 1990 squad. The 2010 Championship marks the 18th for the Dominican Republic, most in Caribbean Series history, and the 6th since 2001.

Reds Prospect Juan Francisco, homered and drove in 3 and lefty Heath Phillips fanned 7 as the Dominican Republic clinched at least a berth in the 2010 Caribbean Series championship with a 7-2 win over Mexico.

As well as things turned out for Los Leones de Escogido, things didn’t start well for them or their starter Phillips. After allowing a leadoff single to Chris Roberson, Phillips served up a 2 out 2 Run home run to Mexico First Baseman Luis Garcia.

But Naranjeros de Hermosillo starter Walter Silva gave it right back. Dominican First Baseman Kevin Barker answered Garcia’s homer, crushing a 2 run blast of his own in the 1st, to tie the game.

With the score 2-2, in the Bottom of the 3rd, back to back singles by Pablo Ozuna & Freddy Guzman started a Dominican rally ]. After Ramon Santiago sacrificed them to 2nd & 3rd, Juan Francisco lined a sacrifice fly to right giving the Dominican Republic a 3-2 lead.

The Dominican offense, which had struggled in the tournament, collected 10 hits…including a solo homer from OF Fernando Martinez to make it 4-2 Leones in the 4th. The Mets #3 prospect according to Baseball America, Martinez, is hitting .316 though the first 5 games of the series with a pair of homers.

But the real offensive star was Francisco. Rated as the 5th best prospect in the Cincinnati System by Baseball America, the burly 3B made his presence felt reaching base safely in all 4 plate appearances including a 2 run homer in the 5th, that gave the Dominican Republic a 6-2 lead.

Francisco’s long ball showed his brute strength. His slicing opposite field homer stayed just fair inside the left field foul pole and just cleared the left field wall at Estadio Guatamare.

While Francsico was doing it at the plate, starter Heath Phillips silenced Mexico’s bats. The veteran lefty who signed a minor league deal with Tampa Bay last week, settled down after his shaky first. Phillips retired the last 12 hitters, and 16 of the last 17 he faced, allowing just, a lead off double in the 3rd following the 2 run first. Phillips big slow breaking ball kept Mexico off balance, as he fanned 7 over 7 innings of 2 run ball.

Mexican hitters continued to struggle. After hitting just .222 through their first 4 games, Los Naranjeros managed just 4 hits against Phillips and 2 relievers.

While the offensive doldrums continued, starter Walter Silva never really gave his teammates a chance. The Mexican starter was chased by Francisco’s homer after allowing 6 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, as the Mexicans fell to 2-3 in the Series.

At 4-1, The Dominicans could clinch the title before they next take the field Sunday Night against Venezuela. A Puerto Rico loss to the Veneluezans tonight, or Mexico tomorrow, will clinch Los Leones de Escogido their first Caribbean Series title in twenty years.

Puerto Rico handed the Dominican Republic their first loss of the series defeating them 7-3.

The Leones del Escogido pitching staff that had been so dominant in the past three games faltered today allowing seven runs on eleven hits. Four players on the Mayaguez teams had multi-hit games.

Felix Diaz was the starting pitcher for the Dominican squad and Andrew Baldwin was on the mound for Mayaguez.

With runners at the corners, Raul Casanova doubled deep to left field scoring Jesus Feliciano to make it a 1-0 game. Next batter, Danny Valencia doubles to left scoring Randy Ruiz and Casanova giving Puerto Rico the 3-0 advantage in the first inning.

Diaz who was having control issues pitched four innings allowing three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out one.

Puerto Rico’s defensive woes continued as they committed two errors in the third inning being their eighth and ninth of the series. The errors extended the inning for the Dominican Republic. Dominican Winter League MVP Juan Francisco who had been struggling since the Finals finally came through with his first hit of the series, a single to left center field scoring Pablo Ozuna getting the Leones within striking distance, 3-1.

Escogido got closer in the fifth inning with a two out rally off of Baldwin when Ramon Santiago drew a walk and Francisco doubled him in to make the score 3-2.

Francisco, who has been struggling defensively, was used as the designated hitter by Ken Oberkfell, went 2-3 with 2 RBI.

Baldwin pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on four hits, walking four while striking out two.

Indios de Mayaguez greeted reliver Juan Carreño with three consecutive singles to open up the sixth inning and pull away. Randy Ruiz came around to score the first of three runs in the inning. Miguel Abreu grounded into a force out that allowed Casanova to cross the plate. Jesus Feliciano singled to center scoring Valencia and giving Mayaguez the 6-2 lead.

Puerto Rico added another run in the seventh when Angel Sanchez singles in Edgardo Baez to go up 7-2. The Dominican team added a run of their own in the eighth inning on Wilkin Castillo’s RBI.

With their fourth consecutive victory the Dominican Republic would have secured at least a tie atop of the leader board, but now they must win on Saturday or Sunday. They will face Mexico who they beat 7-1 in their second game.

Puerto Rico who now stands at .500 will face Venezuela in Saturday’s nightcap looking to remain in contention.

Escogido’s Freddy Guzman stole home to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning giving the Dominican Republic their third consecutive win.

Nerio Rodriguez was the starter for Escogido and southpaw Jose Orteganos was on the mound for the Venezuelan team.

The Dominican team was looking to win three in a row and remain atop of the standings while Venezuela was looking to avoid a loss that would dampen their hopes of repeating as champions.

Errors continue to plague this edition of the Caribbean Series. Two consecutive fielding mistakes by third baseman Juan Francisco and shortstop Ramon Santiago allowed the Leones del Caracas to load the bases in the second inning. Rodriguez worked harder and longer, but managed to strike out Gregorio Petit looking to end the threat.

The Venezuelan team was first to score when in the third inning Oscar Salazar hit a two-run shot to left off of Rodriguez to take the 2-0 lead.

Rodriguez pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed 2 runs while striking out seven.

Orteganos dominated the Escogido lineup keeping them hitless through five innings. In the sixth inning, Pablo Ozuna drew a walk and advanced on a wild pitch making him the first runner to reach second base. Guzman singled to center to break up the no-hitter. Santiago then singled to center scoring Ozuna to make it a one run game and trailed 2-1.

Orteganos was pulled in favor of Edgar Estanga who quickly retired the first two batters he faced. He then walked Willis Otañez to load the bases and face Fernando Martinez who went 2-4 with a home run in Tuesday’s game. He worked Martinez to a full count before getting him to pop out to first in foul territory.

Orteganos pitched five innings allowing one run on two hits, while walking three and striking out three.

In the seventh inning the Dominican team produced a two-out rally against reliever Darwin Cubillan who issued back to back walks to Ozuna and Guzman. Cubillan who had already made two appearances was quickly replaced by Edgar Alfonzo. Santiago came through again with his second single of the night scoring Ozuna and tying the game at 2. Guzman then accomplishes a rare feat by stealing home and giving Escogido the 3-2 lead. Guzman became the third player to steal home in the history of the Caribbean Series.

Cubillan was charged with the loss.

Venezuela ’s bats were silenced in the final two innings and Escogido went on to win the game.

Jose Veras working one scoreless inning in relief got the victory and closer Dario Veras got the save.

The Dominican team will look to pad their lead in the standings against Mexico on Friday.

Venezuela will face Puerto Rico in the second game. They have identical records and neither can afford to lose.

Starter Nelson Figueroa and the Dominican Republic squad dominated the Mexican team from the get-go and beat them 7-1 to become the only team that remains undefeated.

Mexico and the Dominican Republic were both looking to stay undefeated in the Caribbean Series. Each of their pitching staff allowed only one earned run in their opening game.

Figueroa not a stranger to the Latin winter leagues or Mexican baseball has a history with the Naranjeros de Hermosillo having played with them in the 1998-99, 2005-06 and the 2006-07 seasons.

In 2008, Figueroa was voted the MVP of the Caribbean Series by ebeisbol.com website visitors where he pitched for the champion Tigres del Licey ballclub.

Figueroa continued his Caribbean Series dominance pitching nine innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight without walking a batter.

With one out in the first inning, Ramon Santiago doubled to left field. Cincinatti Reds prospect Juan Francisco struck out and reached base on Hector Daniel Rodriguez’swild pitch. Willis Otañez hit a double deep to center scoring them both. Next batter, New York Mets outfielder Fernando Martinez hit a 2-run shot to right field to take the 4-0 lead.

The Dominican team continued the onslaught in the second when Victor Mendez and Pablo Ozuna opened the inning with back to back singles. They advanced on a wild pitch by Rodriguez and Freddy Guzman then singled to center pushing them both in to go up 6-0.

Homar Rojas did not yank his starter after the 6-run lead that Escogido built in the first two innings, but allowed him to stay in and gain back his confidence. That strategy was effective until the sixth inning when Fernando Martinez and Brayan Peña hit back to back singles and Rojas had seen enough. Wilkin Castillo greeted reliever JuanOramas with a single scoring Martinez putting the score at 7-0.

Rodriguez pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing seven runs on eight hits, while striking out five batters and walking three.

The Mexican team finally broke though in the eighth inning when Carlos Valencia spoiled Figueroa’s shutout with a solo home run to left field to get on the board.

The Dominican team’s starting pitching has been impressive and are looking like the favorites early on.

Mexico suffered their first loss of the series and will face Puerto Rico in the first game on Thursday.

Escogido will look to remain undefeated against host Venezuela who is trying to defend their title in tomorrow’s nightcap.

Puerto Rico finally broke through to record their first win in the Caribbean Series by beating the Dominican Republic 3-0. Josue Matos pitched five scoreless innings in the shutout and got the win. Dominican starter Julio Mateo was charged with the loss after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Ivan Maldonado got the save for Puerto Rico.
Ponce got on the board early coming off the bat of Jose Feliciano who hit the ball to right for the solo shot. The Leones added two more including another solo shot by Andy Gonzalez in the sixth.

Aside from being winless through their first four games, Ponce had impressive pitching since the beginning of the series where they had allowed only 9 earned runs and had lost two of the games by only one run. With that win they also put an end to the Ponce losing streak that had reached eleven last night. Hermosillo holds the longest losing streak that stands at 12 games.
Games between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico always have something riding on them regardless if there is a crown involved or not. Eduardo Perez said that they would put a competitive team on the field regardless of the circumstances. “We are not going to give up,” Perez said.

The Dominican team suffered their fourth loss in five games and can only look to finish on a positive note when they face Mexico tomorrow in a game that can be important depending on the outcome of the matchup between Mexico and Venezuela.

Mexico won a shootout 12-9 as both teams’ bats finally woke up and the Venados capitalzed on the Tigres’ errors. Adrian Gonzalez made history when he became the first player in Caribbean Series history to hit three homeruns in a game.

In the first, Anderson Hernandez scored on Dominican Juan Pena’s wild pitch taking the early 1-0 lead.

Venados answered back in the second when Heber Gomez singled to left scoring and left fielder Timo Perez misplayed the ball allowing Christian Presichi and Saul Soto.

Licey drove Pena out of the game scoring three more runs off of him. Pena only lasted 2.1 innings allowing four runs on three hits, walking four while striking out three.

Compatriot Jorge Sosa did not fare that much better. Mazatlan tagged him for three runs in the fourth inning when Agustin Murillo hit an infield single to second scoring Gomez. Adrian Gonzalez brought Murillo in on a long homerun to left center field taking the brief 6-5 lead.

Licey would add another one in the fourth when Jose Bautista hit a soft fly ball to right scoring Willy Aybar tying the game at 6.

In the fifth, Gomez reached base on a force attempt and a missed catch error by Ronny Paulino allowed Ruben Rivera to score. Next batter, Jon Weber singled to right pushing in local Presichi taking the 8-6 lead, both runs were scored off reliever Jailen Peguero. Presichi went 3-5 and scored two runs.

The end of the fifth was followed by a 41 minute delay due to the blackout of some stadium lights. That time was filled by mascot competitions and the Banda Limon who came out on the field and played briefly.

Licey reliever Valerio De Los Santos came out to open up the sixth and Adrian Gonzalez greeted him with a long solo shot to left field to put Mexico up 9-6. Robert Saucedo scored on a wild pitch by Oneli Perez and Gomez hit a sac fly to left scoring Edgar V. Gonzalez widening their lead to 11-6.

Licey got within striking distance in the eighth when Erick Aybar doubled in Ronnie Belliard to make it 11-7. Later in the inning, Ronny Paulino doubled to center and Jon Weber misplayed the ball allowing Erick Aybar and Hernandez to score and get within two, 11-9.

In the ninth, Adrian Gonzalez added an insurance run with his solo shot to left field to make it 12-9.

Rafael Martin came away with the victory pitching in three innings of relief. Sosa took the loss pitching 4.1 innings allowing 8 run (5 of them earned), walking two while striking out two. Hector Navarro came out in the ninth and recorded the save.
